Stellas Italian Bistro at 3375 Waterlevel Highway in Cleveland was recently recommended to us, so we made a special trip to try it out. This is a small restaurant, but has a big sign out front, so you wont miss it as you drive by.

There were a few things that turned me off about this place. I noticed the guy making the pizza crusts appeared to be partially baking them, then stacking them in a box on the counter. Also, there were several pizza crusts in pans sitting on the counter right at eye level with two people sitting in the booth, just inches away from their faces (too close for sneezes, etc.). It might be OK, but thats just my point of view. I also noticed at least two people in the kitchen chewing gum, which to me is a no-no around food.

The menu has a lot to offer and they also have daily specials (although our server didnt mention them), which we read on the wallboard. I did ask about the soup of the day and was told, there might be some wedding soup left. That made me feel like it was the bottom of the pot from who knows when.

Wayne wanted an appetizer, but they do not offer appetizers. Menu items include Hot Sandwiches (Italian Sausage or Meatball Parmigiana, Eggplant Parmigiana, plus others) priced from $5.25 to $5.95, served with fries or pasta salad; Cold Sandwiches (Italian Classic Hoagie, Chicken Salad and Italian Caprese), $5.50 to $5.95); and Entree items (Vegetarian Pastas, Shrimp Pastas, Veal Pasta, Pizza, Chicken Pastas, Special Seafood Entrees, Classic Pastas and Baked Pastas). Entree prices range from $4.50 (Stellas Sauce with ziti or linguini) to $11.95 for several different items.

Wayne decided to go with a personal pan pizza (8 X 8 square). The one topping price is $3.50, then $.50 for each additional topping. I ordered from the Special Seafoods the Seafood Platter ($11.95). This dish included linguine with clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari and orange raffi.

Entrees are served with a small house salad and bread, and Wayne ordered a salad to go with his pizza. The salads were nothing special, rather disappointing in fact. They consisted of lettuce, a few cubes of tomato, a small bit of cheese, and packaged croutons (not an olive in sight, but that was certainly fine with Wayne). Stellas only has one salad dressing. We were told when they ran out of the dressing left by the previous building occupant, they didnt buy any more. Wayne felt like that meant they didnt care about their customers preferences.

The bread (even though I dont eat bread, I tried a few bites) was absolutely delicious! I would have enjoyed much more of it.

Wayne said the pizza was very good, and they are generous with the toppings. My seafood platter was wonderful. You could taste a very light hint of garlic along with plenty of seafood. There were, however, two dead mussels, which I set aside on another plate. I appreciated the fact that the shrimp tails had been removed. I would definitely order this dish again. The sauce was tomato-based, but not with an overwhelming tomato-flavor it was perfect.

Other dishes (among many) offered at Stellas are Clam & Shrimp Posillipo, Chicken Piccata, Cannelloni, and Spaghetti Carbonaro.

For dessert Wayne ordered the cheesecake the choice was plain or chocolate. He ordered the plain, which he felt needed to be dressed up a bit. There was no sauce. I went with the chocolate cannoli; quite good but a bit difficult to cut. However, the taste was really good and the filling was rich, creamy, light and fluffy. Yes, I would definitely order that again.

All-in-all, I thought it was good, not great, and Wayne was disappointed. We both thought the prices were reasonable. Its by far not a fancy place, but a nice place. I would go back; Wayne would not.

Hours for Stellas Italian Bistro are Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 AM until 9:30 PM; Saturday from 5:00 PM until 9:30 PM; and Sunday from 12:00 PM until 9:00 PM.

Coconut-bluberry pancakes.

Not very exciting, but thought I would share.
On the weekends since we work on the house for 12-14 hours, I have been making a lot of pancakes to hold the kids over for longer periods of time before the whining starts (kidding).

I despise run of the mill "plain" cakes, so I always try and add some flavor.
Saturday I found a can of coconut milk and a can of bluberries in syrup in the pantry and thought "why not?"

Recipe called for 2 cups milk, and the can was about 1/4 cup shy so I topped it off with milk, mixed everything, drained the berries and folded in.
The results were really good. it had just a hint of coconut flavor, but I bet if I didnt tell somebody, they wouldnt even notice. They cooked up pretty much like a regular, and the fam loved them.

Blue Moon Cruise

The Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce's board of directors boarded the Blue Moon at Ross's Landing for an all-day retreat Monday on the Tennessee River. The day was absoutely perfect! The weather was wonderful, the scenery was spectacular, and the river boat and its crew were very accomodating. I highly recommend this outfit for a corporate gathering or special function. I may or may not have gotten the name totally correct, but there is a new place on Signal that is absolutely amazing! It opened up recently near the pumpkin patch playground on Signal Mtn (technically Waldens Ridge) and I went with my dad today for a late lunch. Everything on the menu was mouthwatering! It was so hard to decide! Its a bbq/meat 'n three/yummyyummyyummy and everything is homemade, from scratch, with love.

After staring at the menu for what felt like forever I settled on the half a smoked chicken, grilled veggies, and brunswick stew. Each entree came with 2 sides AND cornbread AND coleslaw, they do not want you to leave hungry! I have never had a smoked chicken that melted in my mouth the way this did, it was dripping in its own juices and had a fabulous smoked flavor. Not to mention even after sitting at the table for ten minutes while I polished off the brunswick stew and caught up with my dad it was still piping hot! The brunswick stew was so flavorful and chock full of meat, corn, potatoes, and tomatoes (and lord knows what else). The veggies were sliced zucchini, squash, carrots, and maybe some onion and they were nicely charred and perfectly seasoned. Coleslaw? Amazing. As far as I could tell it was the classic vinegar version versus the creamy mayonaisey (ick) kind. Cornbread? Fluffy with a nice crunch on the outside.

I've completely forgotten about our appetizer! Fried green beans. Yummmm. They had a cornbready type breading on them and were served with a chipolte-mayonaise dipping sauce. Crunchy, hot, and they were practically on the table before I finished ordering them!

Our server could've used a bit of a personality but really, who cares??? At this place it is all about the food. And it should be, the food is AMAZING.

They have some funky hours to work around, Wednesday through Sunday I believe, from 11am to 8pm. I don't have the menu in front of me so I might be a little off. I ate this meal at around 1:30 and its currently 8:54 and I'm still not hungry! You can't go wrong with this new smokehouse. Next time I go back I'm trying the ribs...or maybe the brisket...sampler platter...tuna steak....ribeye...veggie panini...nachos... You see why it took so long for me to decide. Too many wonderful things to choose from, you see my problem!!!

Woke up and within three minutes dropped and shattered a big glass jug of water on the kitchen floor.
We picked up the big pieces and Hubby mopped up all the water.
Hubby then knocked over the mop bucket full of water.
We're going hiking today and will probably fall off the cliffs.

GE Elec range and hood for sale

I had to buy all three items to get a dishwasher a guy was selling, so I need to unload this range. It is very nice, I cant imagine the folks cooked anything at all, it is so clean. It is a GE Spectra stove and a Broan range hood, both are beige and approximately 5-8 years old in good working order.

I have them in Cleveland right now, but can deliver within reason if needed.

Janet and Wayne, did I reset anything on my viewing preferences? My restaurant list is out of sync. Carrabbas is between the t's and the r's are mixed in with the s's and such.
The restaurants were always listed alpabetically, but they're not tonight.
Great, I can't type slowly enough to spell correctly and now I've hit something that's de-syncronized me too.
A little tech help here, Wayne, if you're feeling better.

I have a prayer request.

My ex-boss's grandson was diagnosed with Burkett's Lymphoma and has been undergoing multiple horrible chemo and operations since Memorial Day. He was doing well and they thought they had it, but they just found out it is back and bigger than before. He is only 8 years old. I would appreciate all your prayers for him and his family. Please put them on your prayer list at church. His name is Joshua Rice. Thanks.
